Liberal Preacher Tony Campolo and Darwinism

Tony Campolo in light of Darwin’s b-day celebration wrote about what he views as racism in the realm of Darwinism. This was in response to those in the scientific community and special interests and others he says reject intelligent design because it has a so-called; “religious bias.”

“In reality, Darwin’s writings, when actually read, express the prevalent racism of the nineteenth century, and endorse an extreme laissez faire political ideology that legitimates the neglect of the suffering poor by the ruling elite.”

“Those who argue at school board meetings that Darwin should be taught in public schools seldom have taken the time to read what he had to say. If they even knew the full title of his book, which is On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life, they might have gained some inkling of the racism propagated by this controversial theorist.”

Tony Campolo lacked any quality quotes in his accusation. No doubt skeptics will jump all over the omissions. But when you make such claims one needs to back it up with a least a quote or two if not more! But I do agree with his contention, there was certain aspects of racism contained in Darwin’s viewpoint, which is quoted below…

The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex:

“With savages, the weak in body or mind are eliminated; and those that survive commonly exhibit a vigorous state of health. We civilised men, on the other hand, do our utmost to check the process of elimination; we build asylums for the imbecile, the maimed, and the sick; we institute poor-laws; and our medical men exert their utmost skill to save the life of every one to the last moment.

“There is reason to believe that vaccination has preserved thousands, who from a weak constitution would formerly have succumbed to small-pox. Thus the weak members of civilised societies propagate their kind. No one who has attended to the breeding of domestic animals will doubt that this must be highly injurious to the race of man.”

“It is surprising how soon a want of care, or care wrongly directed, leads to the degeneration of a domestic race; but excepting in the case of man himself, hardly any one is so ignorant as to allow his worst animals to breed.”

Clearly racism implications in which Darwin expresses. But this evil bias doesn’t necessarily disqualify the scientific validity of the rest of it’s claims as Tony Campolo asserts.

There are many other aspects which makes evolution invalid like many failed predictions, much story telling like some scientists (paleontologist Roger Buick to name one of many) who are claiming that microbe evolution was completed before we had a record of them or others claim, evolution just stopped for microbes 2.5 billion years ago which makes one wonder about the foundation of this theory has in empirical science. And lastly, the leap of faith which adds to it’s enormous complexity.

Keep in mind, I don’t endorse Tony Campolo and other true Christians shouldn’t either, he believes in a one world church like the Vatican does and has many errors in his doctrinal beliefs. Not surprisingly, he also endorses liberal politics and has worked under Clinton…

  1. Here you go on about story telling again …

In any case, one should not teach “Darwin”, but the theory of evolution, which of course has progressed a great deal since since his days.

Of course racism was common in Darwin’s days, and he was a child of his time. Still, that says nothing at all about the validity of a scientific theory, whatever the political view of the people who came up with the theory.

And what do you mean by ‘special interest groups’ ? I have no idea … are you talking about christians there ?
