Discovering More Parts On Life’s Rotary Engine

One of the most important if not thee important parts of our bodies which includes all other living things as well is this amazing enzyme called ATP synthase which is the world’s tiniest rotary motor! Without it, and its function life could not exist.  ATP is designed to provide usable energy for cellular machines. Its protein machines power almost everything that goes on inside living cells, including manufacturing DNA, RNA, and proteins, clean-up of debris, and transporting chemicals into, out of, and within cells. Other fuel sources is not able to provide power for these cellular protein machines for the same reasons that oil, or sunlight will not power a gasoline engine.

Logical thinking and common sense about an automobile engine leads us to think that only a clever person (with mind and will) could make this particular machine that is able to convert energy from one form to another for the purpose of moving a car. The machine shows orderly, specified proportions which includes a very clever use of interdependent parts that are the right size, shape and strength to work together for an overall purpose.

Three European scientists, reporting in PNAS cleverly used quantum mechanical approaches to study the amazing enzyme, ATP where they were able to analyze the energy flow during production of ATP in the beta subunits. The alpha subunit rotates like a waterwheel turning a camshaft called the gamma subunit. The authors were able to discover two transition states within the 120° motion that favor the reaction one way, like a ratchet. “These two TSs [transition states] are concluded crucial for ATP synthesis,” they said.

They found that as the enzyme progresses into these states, energy barriers are set up that block the reverse direction, just like a ratchet on a tool. The authors also noted how difficult its getting in studying the ATP, “The complex function of ATP synthase makes this enzyme special compared to many other enzymes and makes computational investigation challenging,” they said.

Many other researchers study the ATP, and a full understanding of the reaction mechanism awaits its discovery in the future, but the authors felt “we have shown how the positions of alpha-S344 and alpha-R373 [two amino acid residues in the active site] may drastically influence the rate and, in this way, attenuate the reversal of these reaction steps.”

It’s no accident that this amazing and highly advanced tiny rotary machine essential to all living things resembles machines produced by intelligence! Even “point mutations of alpha-S347Q and alpha-S347A have dramatic effects on ATP synthase function both for synthesis and hydrolysis.” For the most part evolution wasn’t even mentioned but was mentioned in passing with the claim of learning more about it. Learning about what is happening in the real world is good science which confirms God’s word but attaching a story about evolution to it, doesn’t reveal any light but creates unnecessary speculation.

  1. It’s no accident that this amazing and highly advanced tiny rotary machine essential to all living things resembles machines produced by intelligence!

Once again, Michael fervently hopes to show design by giving chemical processes the same names as human artifacts. Conversion of chemical energy becomes an “engine” for driving a “car.” A chemical reaction that proceeds in only one direction becomes a “ratchet” in a “tool.” Rotating subunits of a protein are magically transformed into a “waterwheel” and a “camshaft.”[1]

But why stop with biological systems? The Sun produces energy by the same mechanism as a human-designed hydrogen bomb. Thus proving that the Sun was Intelligently designed! The hydrologic cycle on Earth heats water to evaporate, transport, and condense water, just like a complex human-designed steam engine. Therefore weather was Intelligently Designed!

    .

Michael is of course not alone in trying to show design in nature by analogizing to human constructs. It is probably the oldest fallacy in the creationist playbook, and still the most common. Even as we speak, Casey Luskin is striving mightily to pass off genetic sequences as “codes” from an intelligent agent.

In case Michael missed it above, the point is that analogy is not evidence.

[1] This is a little far-fetched. None of my cars have a waterwheel, much less one coupled to the camshaft.

  2. One of the most important if not thee [sic] important parts [sic] of our bodies which includes all other living things as well is this amazing enzyme called ATP synthase

Michael seems to think that ATP synthase is an amazing design.

But, which form of this enzyme is he praising? Many different forms exist. Plants have one form in chloroplasts; another form exists in other mitochondria—and these two forms not only differ structurally, but operate by two different mechanisms. More than a half dozen different forms have been well characterized.

One interesting aspect if ATP syntheses is that they can be easily placed into an evolutionary tree.

    So much for design.

  3. Olorin,

Even as we speak, Casey Luskin is striving mightily to pass off genetic sequences as “codes” from an intelligent agent.

In a reply to Luskin, yet unapproved at the present moment that I am writing this comment, I told him that if it weren’t for common knowledge, even Paley would not know that a watch was “intelligently designed.” We know that man-made artifacts are designed for several reasons, among which the products have labels such as “made in China,” or what not…not to mention, we can actually see these items designed in person if we wish to… Not so with biological organisms, though we have seen such organisms evolve.

  4. The Evo News & Views[1] thead has not changed all day. Are they done? Is it becoming overloaded? Casey Having a harder time rebutting?

My last one probably won’t make the grade. Getting too snarky. Reed Cartwright has a post on Pandas Thumb on his proposed Bayesian-factor test

  5. Omitted footnote:

    =============

[1] Why do they call it that if it’s supposed to be about intelligent design??

  6. @Olorin

The Evo News & Views[1] thead has not changed all day. Are they done? Is it becoming overloaded? Casey Having a harder time rebutting?

Perhaps so. In the comment I told you about, I also mentioned how Herman J. Muller used evolutionary theory to predict Irreducible Complexity, and then I asked him if IC were such a danger to Darwinian evolution, then why did scientists as early as 1918 use “Darwin’s hated theory” to predict such organisms?

  7. I came across this site while searching about galaxies. Some of you have been reading Michaels garbage for years and from reading a lot of comments on his articles you all think its bullshit to, seriously why waste your time reading his nonsense. He doesn’t even respond back…

  8. Casey Luskin still has yet to approve and publish.. Perhaps He won’t. It is possible he has moved on since there are newer posts on his blog.

  9. @Olorin

True. I mean, the sites that are linked to the Discovery Institute as well as most Creationist sites are merely for the purpose of preaching to the choir, and so most of the comments they get will be supportive. Getting dissenting comments is not something they prepare for… Let’s remember the site “Creation Revolution” that banned me from commenting, despite the fact I did not violate any terms and did not get rude or insulting with anyone.

  10. Hm. Preaching to the choir.

That must be why Intelligent Design programs and lectures are always held at religious institutions, instead of at scientific gatherings. Because scientific symposia don’t have choirs.
