The Vatican Celebrates Darwin’s Birthday

Another official declaration from Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi, head of the Pontifical Council for Culture, claiming the theory of evolution is compatible with the Christian faith.

Through the years, the Vatican has voiced stout criticism directed at in particular, Christian fundamentalists who reject evolution and interpret the biblical account of creation literally. Cardinal Paul Poupard, said the Genesis description of how God created the universe and Darwin’s theory of evolution were “perfectly compatible” if the Bible were read correctly.

“Marc Leclerc, who teaches natural philosophy at the Gregorian University, said that no scholar could “remain indifferent” to the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth tomorrow. There was, however, “no question of celebrating” it.”

I believe for many years, even before these official declarations were coming from the Vatican. Pius XII described evolution as a valid scientific approach to the development of humans and he was Pope during the 1950s. I believe evolution became mainstream in Catholicism when Pope John Paul II in 1996 addressed to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. The Pope stated that “new knowledge has led to the recognition of the theory of evolution as something more than just a hypothesis.”

Next month the Vatican is going to hold a conference on evolution which bans creationists, but not quite intelligent design proponents. However, their stage in the conference will be as the “fringe” and discussed more as a “cultural phenomenon” rather than on a scientific level. I suspect intelligent design was accepted because ID advocates not all things in the Universe was intelligent designed. So with this worldly influence, the plan to ban was lifted. But not enough to be taken more than just a fringe element in the conference next month.

What a world we live in, religions like Catholicism attack creationism, while viewing intelligent design as “fringe.” This of course is not surprising for bible believers because when Christ walked the earth 2000 years ago, it wasn’t the Roman Empire that was the main threat, or the greatest opposition, rather it was the religious opposition of His day!

  1. What is so new about one religion attacking another religion ? This has been happening for as long as people can remember, and it is not just going to stop now. I’m not at all surprised that the Catholic religion is attacking the creationist/ID religion …
